The Kashmir valley, famous for its mesmerizing colors , mountains, and breathtaking meadows, is also known for kashida (embroidery). Kashmiri artisans are well known for taking inspiration from blissful springs, bright colors of summer, brazen hues of autumn and snow-laden mountains in winter in their art of weaving. There is a close link between the nature, the history and craft of Kashmir, which is reflected in the characteristics and development of Kashmiri embroidery. Kashmiri embroidery is also famous for its graceful use of motifs. These motifs are depicted from local flowers, birds, shrubs and flora. The artisans of Kashmir have perfected the art of expressing human emotions and telling stories of the Kashmir landscape through their stitch work. Aari and Zari embroidery are among the most well-known methods Kashmiri artisans use to weave intricate patterns and elaborate designs on clothing and turn a piece of cloth into a work of art that has been preserved by Kashmiri brands.
Till recent times, Aari and Zari embroidered fabric were considered as outfits for special occasions such as weddings, but Angad Creations believe it’s time to extend these masterful techniques into everyday fashion that more people can wear and relate to. This vision inspired us to reinvent traditional Aari and Zari embroidery in their modern avatar.
Journey of Aari and Zari Embroidery
The Aari embroidery pattern has its roots in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, and in Kutch and other places in Gujarat. With time, the techniques and motifs of Aari embroidery traveled to Kashmir and other parts of the subcontinent under the patronage of Mughal kings, making it a symbol of heritage.
Aari embroidery is a detailed process that begins with freehand drawing of designs on fabric. Then the fabric is secured to a Khatla (tambour) for ease of handling. Artisans use a hook needle, or Aari, to stitch the design. Holding the thread at the back of the fabric and the needle in the other hand, the needle is inserted, twisted, and brought back up through the fabric. The process is then repeated to create intricate embroidery.
Zari embroidery has been a significant part of the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir for centuries. Its origin can be traced back to the Mughal kingdom when it was used to embellish the garments of kings, but over time the art form became so popular and accessible that it was incorporated into the traditional dress of Kashmiri people. Zari embroidery is a highly skilled, time-consuming process. The technique is unique and distinct from other forms of embroidery due to its intricate use of metallic thread(originally gold and silver thread were used) to create exquisite patterns and designs.
The Zari embroidery process starts with tracing a design on paper and transferring it onto fabric using a pouncing pad with a chalk solution. Then the fabric is stretched on a wooden frame for even tension. craftsmen use different needles and threads to create intricate patterns, borders, and designs. This detailed and complicated method is time-consuming and sometimes takes months for.
